CinemAsia Film Festival Interview ENG: Deepti Rao.

Deepti Rao

CinemAsia Film Festival is from the 6th till the 11th of March 2018.

Interview by: Feargal Agard | FilmLAB participant: Deepti Rao.

Film: Father and Son (2018) | Genre: Drama | Languages: Hakka (Chinese).

I am Deepti Rao.

“I am Deepti Rao and I am a filmmaker from South India focusing on short fiction and documentary films. I began my film career as an assistant director on a big budget advertising film in Bombay after which I studied at the Prague Film School where I specialized in screenwriting. I graduated last year with a research Master from the University of Groningen where I studied the influence of fiction film on empathy in children.”

Father and Son (2018).

“During CinemAsia FilmLAB, I was involved with the filmLAB project Father and Son (2018) as the co-writer. The initial idea for the story of Father and Son came from the director Jimmy Tai. When I discovered what the story was all about, it appealed a lot to me. There was a sense of loss and love, but an inability to verbally and physically convey these feelings between the characters in the story, which I saw as a challenge to transform it into a short film script.”

“I am new to the Dutch film industry.”

“The CinemAsia filmLAB project for me was very useful as I am new to the Dutch film industry. Besides that, it is always nice to have a community where you can discuss and critique each other’s work in a healthy manner. I would have liked to be more involved of course but I am happy I got this opportunity to work on a script and see it realized. To start over in a new city, so different from what one is used to, in a totally different language is daunting, but it is opportunities like this that helped me immensely along the way.”

“The Indian community in the Netherlands.”

“At the moment, I am writing a few more short film scripts. I am attempting to explore different aspects of the Indian community in the Netherlands. Particularly with female lead characters, which I would like to realize in the near future.”
